This hike marked the completion of my Fall round of the Catskill 3500' peaks!
The weather was NOT fall like at all. It snowed lightly all day (forecast: mostly sunny!) and the temps hovered around 15F. Stepping into 3 streams today, I discovered that I LOVE my Merrell's! My feet never got the least bit wet. The Neversink and his buddies are flowing well, and the rocks are wet and icy! The huge bridge is still standing, but the crib full of rocks is completely empty! I can't imagine how much force that water must have had!
Anyway, we walked all the way to the last split of the Neversink on the map, and then turned up to Rocky. The ascent was pretty easy, as we did 900' in about 45 minutes. The canister was waiting for us, and had been visited recently by 2 men whose names were hard to make out. After a little break, we headed over to Lone. It was definitely compass time now, since it is very thick in there. We were helped by a glimpse now and then of Lone. We found a well-maintained herd path running perpendicular to our path just above the col on the Lone side! We followed it for a while but it was obviously not going to the summit. We made it up thru a few hairy cliffs, and found an unopened bottle of Gatorade just below the summit! It was not frozen, so I assume it was dropped by one of the 2 men who signed into both peaks today. If you really want it back, you can have it, as it is not our favorite flavor!
Dropping down off of Lone, we found the huge cliff wall, with the spring gushing out. Always amazing to see water just pouring out of a rock wall!
Back down we went, crossing the Donovan Brook, the bridges, and walking down the road to the car, in a little over 7 hours.
Now, just one peak, Fir, awaits for my second Winter Round and my 4th overall! I can't wait for December 21!
