We've been chomping at the bit for this rain to stop so we could go out and finish our last peak (for this list, not for good ). I double checked with Harry to see if he was still on for today and he said yes. It was finally not going to be raining! It was nice to have someone that could join us mid week. That's tough for most people even us with school but I shuffled everything around and off we went.
The drive up was uneventful but it did start to rain once we got there. The wind was howling and blowing the car around a bit and I thought, I hope that weather man was right and this was going to stop. I don't know when it stopped last night but when we woke, the sun was trying to peak out. We headed over to the Garden to get ready and wait for Harry, who was nice enough to take his last vacation day to join us! What a friend!
We started up the trail heading over the Brothers. There was no snow at the bottom but we could see it on Noonmark and figured we'd have some as we got higher. The temperature was a cool 33 degrees...brrrr but once we started walking, we heated up nicely.
The cliffs on the Brothers were not bad...mostly wet. What little ice there was, we skirted around. The views were nice. The foliage was OK...mostly yellow but still pretty with the snow on top of it. The further up we went, the more snow there was on the ground and more water. We took our time and made it to the summit in good time. It was socked in at the summit but we were rejoicing anyway. Thank you so much Sponge Bob for the Travel Bugs and the patches! That was such a surprise and then Harry gave us the other ones! The kids were estatic! After Beth opened the "champaigne", we toasted and just enjoyed the fact that we were actually there. Then all of a sudden, I saw the sun trying to come through and I saw trees...they all thought I had to much to drink. Silly people. Then Harry saw the mountains pop out. We all started screaming and grabbing for the cameras but the views disappeared just as quickly! We waited up there for an hour but with the temps at still 33-34 degrees and we were getting too chilly to stay. Matter of fact, Harry gave Adam footwarmers because his feet were so chilly. So after a couple of guys that came up after us took our pic at the top, we reluctantly headed down.
We took our time on the way down stopping and taking pics and just enjoying the walk out. I didn't want to go. When we went back over the Brothers, we looked at the Great Range, which was in full views with sun and clouds about them but back where we came from were dark clouds then it started spitting snow. That was neat! We saw a couple of girls by the First Brother hiking in shorts! Brrrrrr!!!!
Well, it's hard to believe we're done and I look forward to the next adventure! Thanks again to Harry for being a great guide this summer and company. Also thanks to Al and the kids, and the Maxsons. I'm so glad we met you guys! You made some of the long hikes so fun, they didn't even seem long or like work. Also, it was nice to meet some of you VFTTers out on the trails! This has been a great summer. Here's to winter coming?!!
