Whoah, I'm halfway there! Whoah, I'm livin' on a prayer! At least that's how I feel right now...
On Saturday, though I'm still recovering from strep throat, I had the pleasure of hiking with two of my favorite hiking partners, Sadie and Gator as I reached my goal for this winter, 24 NH 4Ks! (There was no way I was going to rest on the last weekend of the season) This was going to be Sadie's first time up Flume and Gator was taking time off the slopes to take one for the team and join in the fun!
We met at the Whithouse parking area for a car spot and then headed over to Lincoln Woods. Once there, we geared up and headed out on the Wilderness Trail. Though we could have used them, we opted not to put on our crampons. The trail was all ice. Miraculously, none of us fell! Once we hit the Osseo trail, Gator and I put on our crampons . However, before too long, we reached a long stretch of bare trail so, off came the crampons (Sadie had STABILicers on which she kept on the whole hike, smart girl).
Later, we came back onto the snow but Gator and I didn't want to stop to put the crmpons on again so we kept going without them longer than we should. There were no tracks on the trail, just the ghosts of some old postholes. We climbed steadily and the going got trickier without traction. We had a couple placed we wrestled with getting up until near where the third section of stairs was burried we put the crampons on again, 'cause we'ah wicked smaht!
Finally, we got past all the steep stuff and once again really enjoyed the woods. They were so beautiful, it almost made you want to cry. This was the most beautiful woods walk that any of us could remember. The thick blanket of snow on everything and the sunlight shining though making everything glow and glisten. God am I going to miss winter!
Soon, we were on the ridge. We made note about how unused the Flume Slide Trail looked and headed off towards Flume. On the exposed ridge, the wind was blowing and Sadie got a little nervous with how narrow the trail was, was far the drop off was, and the fact that is wass covered in ice didn't help. Nevertheless, we all made it up to the summit safe and sound. I took some pics and we kept on. We descended quickly and then climbed up toward Liberty. As we crossed through the col, I remembered that stormy June day last year when I had done this route before and I recalled how a storm broke as I had been leaving Flume and how it had passed by the time I got to Liberty. What a different day this was!
Once at Liberty, we celebrated a little and I thought about the sunny day last September when I helped with the Flags On The 48 celebration. I also thought about the great hikes I had this winter, the people I shared them with (thanks all!), and I wondered what next winter will have in store for us. With my head and everything else in the clouds, we headed off descending and then... ascending??? After we had been climbing for a little bit we realized the aweful truth, we had gotten turned around and were climbing back up Flume!!! Did I mention that we'ah wicked smaht? We had no idea how this happened but, it wasn't any big deal. What's another 2.8mi of fun and a wasted car spot? Gator had originally wanted to go down Osseo and now he was getting his wish!
On the way down, we found the going much easier since we had broken the trail and had our crampons on. It was quite a bit of fun. When we reached the section of bare trail, Gator and I took off the crampons again (why not?) and barebooted until we hit the Wilderness trail where we put them on again.
After getting back to the car, we headed over to Woodstock Inn for dinner and beers. We reflected on a great hike, a great season and reaching goals you set for yourself. We congradulated each other on a job well done and raised a toast to RS, wherever he may be!
Here are some pics from the day!
