Following the rabbits track on Big Slide. (01/10/2009)
Friday during my preparation, I had several opportunities for our saturday's hike, according to my 46W winter list. But I must say that I almost or always chosen our destination at the last minute. And in winter, with Annie, I have to choose according to her.
I had invitation from Tyler, who was going to Nippeltop and Dial, and I need Dial. I had another invitation from Adam, who was going to Colvin and Blake, and I need Blake. I thought to do Whiteface and Esther. After discussion with Pinpin, he told me to wait and not doing Whiteface and Esther this Saturday. Well, after discussion with Annie, we decided to make a loop to Lower Wolfjaw and Upper Wolfjaw and we went to bed with this destination in our mind. But, when I woke up, around 3.00 am, I thought of Big Slide, because the weather forecast is a beautiful sunny day. After our departure, I saw that we would not have enough time to join friends. And doing the Wolfjaw, we do not have views and we should reserve it for an ordinary day, not for a beautiful day like today. I also thought to do that Dial, who has a beautiful view, since we would have a late departure. So that's why we chose Big Slide for its many scenic views and that we never done in winter.
The funniest part of the day, we had it at the U.S. border.
We arrived at the Nexus booth, we encounter the customs officer. He has a strange look, it looks like he comes out of a photo album, black and white, of the years 40 or 50. His hat was almost to his eyes, just to see and almost to his shoulders, he looks pretty special. Then come the questions. I think with all these years that we cross the border I could write a book on all these questions and the look that customs officers have. So, today's questions: Q: Where are you going today? A: We going snowshoeing. Q:Where? A: In the Adirondack. Q: Have you made a reservation? A: Sorry, a reservation?
(I realized that maybe he asked me if I make a reservation for the mountain) Q: (It changes question) How long will you stay in the USA? A: Only for the day. Then he looks at our record on the computer, it take a while. He comes back and asks me to close the engine of my car and give him the car keys to look in the trunk. But I told him that I can open it from inside. He says, "You can open it from inside." He still take my keys, even if I had opened the trunk. We imagine the kind of car he must have for not knowing that you can open the trunk from the inside. Finally after many strange questions, he give us back our cards and we leave. Oufff! Very special this customs officer. He seemed lost and strange. We hope we will never have to see him again.
We arrive late at the Garden parking and it was almost full. It is -22C / -8F, but no wind and there will be no wind all day and we never felt the cold. The Brothers trail to Big Slide, is on a solid base and was covered with fresh snow. I opened the path for a part of the climb. I also opened on our way back, the Slide Brook trail to the Phelps trail. The paths were covered with 6-8 inches of snow. And in several places, there were 12 to 18 inches of snow. By opening the trail, I followed the Rabbits track in the snow. But not Pinpin track.
Today, only snowshoes were necessary.
It was an ideal temperature for hiking. I can not remember the last time we had a dark blue sky like that. A beautiful day.
