trails: sabbaday brook trail, bushwhack
conditions: the sabbaday brook trail was packed down hard to the falls. travelled beyond, but not hard packed. up to probably six inches of snow in spots, but much less in others. we followed the trail to it's last crossing of the brook before heading up tripyramid and bushwhacked north of east directly up to the ridge of fool killer. steep, but open woods. not much snow cover on this side of the peak with some ice to watch out for. more snow along the crest of the ridge and on its east side. once on the ridge we turned southeast to the summit. followed our tracks on the return trip to the trail. water crossings were numerous. the upper ones were not an issue. partially frozen with good stepping stones. the lower 3 were done on ice bridges that were a little sketchy, but ultimately held us fine. heading in we followed a beaten track around the first two, but crossed them without incident on the return.
equipment: though snow cover isn't great snowshoes were still the best all around option.
comments: nice day to hike the fool killer. neat green ice in the brook and good looks from the slopes of the peak to tripyramid and the sleepers. cold and windy on the ridge crest, but relatively mild the rest of the day. thanks to jeremy and amy for a good hike.
