Franconia Ridge 2-24-2006
Satori and I arrived Friday evening at the Lyons bunkhouse on Rt. 3 in Twin Mt., where we met up with Giggy and chatted with him about what our plan would be for Sat., Giggy and his friend Jeff had decided they would be ice climbing the Lincolns throat and re-joining the group at some point on the ridgeline.
We also met up with and had the pleasure of talking with Big Earl and Unfrozen caveman and sharing their plans for the weekend, they would be putting in lots of mileage.
We started Saturday early, rising at 5am and having a good breakfast. Giggy and Jaytrek decided to spot cars at Lincoln woods while wewaited for Forty8 to arrive. MEB and Little Sister spotted cars at Liberty Springs trailhead and we were all to meet at Lafayette campground parking lot.
The plan was to hike the OBP to Franconia ridge Layfayette,Lincoln Liberty and Flume and back to Liberty springs for a descent.
Satori, Forty8 and I arrived at the parking lot where we met up with Drewski, MEB, Little Sister, Jaytrek, NH Mt. Hiker and Jeff. We said our Hello's and intro's and started our day about 7:45 am.
The trail was well packed and we bare-booted until we got to the Agony ridge, where before climbing the Agony we put on our crampons, snacked, took pics and moved forward. The trail at this point was not so bad, but crampons were definitely needed throughout the rest of the day, especially up on the ridge.
We CLIMBED to the Greenleaf hut, had some hot soup chatted for a short time, layered up and headed to the summit of Layfayette. Thanks MEB for dragging your thermo rest up with you, and sharing. : )
The climb to the summit of Lafayette was uneventful. As we approached the summit, the winds had picked up and the temps were in the single digits, we didn’t stay very long before moving onto Lincoln. The ridgeline had some snowdrifts in spots but very manageable and with our crampons the icy areas were safely traveled.
Moving quickly to Lincoln we took pictures on the summit and and then off for a quick getaway-to Little Haystack. At Haystack it was decided that 3 of our hiking companions would be leaving us to descend the Liberty Springs Trail, and the remaining 6, would continue to Liberty and Flume. Drewski decided to make a quick ascent to tag Liberty and then back to descend LST with Forty8 and Jaytrek.
It was also decided at this point that we would not return to Liberty springs trail after tagging Liberty and Flume, but instead we would descend the Osseo Trail. Jaytrek and Drewski agreed to pick up the remaining 6, at the Osseo trailhead parking lot. Phew!! That was so nice.
It was also decided the morning of the hike whoever arrived at Little Haystack first would leave a red flag to signal their arrival, this alerted Giggy that we had already past and he would meet up with us or vise versa.. Giggy did meet up with us on our the way to Flume, and I might add he was in all one piece, but I can’t say that for his jacket, I am sure he will elaborate more in his TR. We were all very happy to see his smiling face!
We finished up at about 5:30 and with the help of all the spotted cars made it back safely to the Lyons bunkhouse for dinner. We all enjoyed MEB”S yummy veggie lasagna, Marsha’s delectable salad , spaghetti/meatballs and Giggys Italian bread. Sorry about the pine nuts Giggy>
Congrats to Forty8 for his first winter hike in the whites, Mean girl you are almost there, and Satori we are making some progress. Aren’t we!
Drewski, we will be there on Sat!! Whoet : )
Jeff thanks for blazing the trail on Osseo, I am so glad you had your snowshoes. : ) it was very nice meeting you and thanks for the ride back to my car.

As always we all seem to learn something when we venture out into the wilderness, whether we are newbies or seasoned hikers we all come out with a better understanding of the wilderness and always we learn from our experiences.
Until next time.
