Friday 3/23, Drewski came to Charles and my motel room an hour earlier than we were supposed to meet at Lafayette. We palced my car at the Basin and took Drewski's car up to Lafayette Place where Tim Seaver was waiting. Geared up and took off towards Greenleaf Hut. Met some people on the way down. Had to put on snowshoes early on. The ridge was covered in fog and we hoped it would break by the time we summited. Here and there Tim took off ahead to shoot photos. After Greenleaf Hut we put on crampons and another layer of clothing since it got colder and was pretty windy up there.
Met a Richie between Greenleaf Hut and Lafayette and we joined forces. After photos and pushups on the summit we continued down towards Lincoln. Charles was mighty confused how Tim and Drewski were able to get good grip on the ice without crampons while he himself was sliding like a banana peal on a soaped floor. Tim explained and showed his screws he and Drewski add to the bottom of their shoes.
Ritchie left us on Little Haystack while the rest of us started to pack the trail to Liberty. Sun took over and we enjoyed the rest of the day in warm sunshine. Ran into avk4316 right before the summit. He passed me and was up on the summit before me. Tim was already up there taking shots of the approaching hikers. avk4316 was there with a student of his. We had a nice talk in the sunshine. Drewski and Charles went down Liberty Springs Trail while
Tim and I went over to Flume and took off our snowshoes before heading down the unbroken Flume Slide trail. My snowshoes (kathoola Flight Deck) refused to come off the overboot since the steel wire used to release the snowshoe was gone. Tim pulled out a razor and cut me off the snowshoe. We cautiously continued down the endless and steep trail until it finally leveled off and we tried to find the way to the TH. Unfortunately the blue trail blazes was only painted on the "upward side" of the tree so it caused some confusion finding the trail. Drewski andCharles had been waiing an hour a the cqr before we showed up. We were all happy to see each other and look forward to a hot shower and a cold beer.
