For NH residents, state parks will have free admission on Sunday, June 18. This includes the Cannon tram and the Flume, where you can do a 2-mile walk in to the gorge and back or stretch it a bit longer on a side trail. Proof of residency required. Read the small print--several qualifications and exclusions

Does anyone know from the past if it gets crowded because it's free??

If it is a nice day the Tramway will be crowded. Many park visitors are not from NH, many in NH don't know it's free, and many go when it's convenient rather than when it's free. I would say overall less crowded than July 4 or Labor Day, for example.

Bring a printout of the web page if you visit obscure parks. Last year I went to 4 parks:
1) First was open but not yet charging anybody
2) Second the manager had never heard of free day but took my word for it
3) Third was not open yet, walked in from gate
4) Fourth the manager had read something in the paper about free day but had not been notified by Parks department

I guess you can see how many free visitors those parks got :)

I used to work at a small NH state park. On "Free Day" traffic only slightly increased and most people had no idea until they arrived at the gate.
