Trail condtions: went counterclockwise today.. GaleRiver trail had a fair amount of mud down below..all crossings were fine though the first big one a little dicey due to rushing water and noise..quite a bit higher than trip here couple of weeks ago. Ascent to GRT muddy inspots though the steps were dry..passed several folks descending from the hut. GRT muddy with running water in many places. After dropping packs at the hut the Frost trail a breeze with the usual mud holes down below,,hazy view from the outlook, Twin way to South Twin steep with some slippery and running water spots but dried out as we got higher. North Twin Spur the pick of the day with long stretches of soft though packed trail..real nice footing.. North Twin Trail down..upper section has been about 50% brushed out down to the viewpoint..sure made for easier going there..section not yet thinned is narrow and you are whacking through spruce the whole way. After some smooth trail along the ridge the North Twin Trail drops off and a long and winding descent..no real steep spots but plenty of running water and loose rock to keep it interesting.after a couple of minor crossing with copious waterflow we apporached the major (third) crossing of the Little River,,Pretty good water volume going through here..Frank, the gymnast in the group walked across one of the blowdowns spanning the brook..well above the raging torrent..Andrea and i took the chickens route and took rocks as far as we could then waded across in sparkling refreshing mid calf deep water..easy enough..The dry shoe club of Karen and Mary went 25 yards upstream of the stone bar there and followed a narrow band of smaller stone that kept them mostly dry.. Parts of the bushwack to avoid the other 2 crossings are in better shape that many regular trails..just some nasty side hill cuts of mud and roots to contend with but we were soon back on the main trail with smooth dry sailing on a wide smooth footbed
Equipment: I advised all that this would indeed be a summer hike and we delighted in pulling out gloves hats fleece and rain pants and leaving them at the car
a thin layer helpful in 8-10 mph breeze on South Twin but other than that the only thing that came out of the packs was lunch
poles helpful on crossings..those without properpoles used some interesting sticks
Comments: great day out with OTHH Grumpy Gram, Cymbidium, Frank, and a newbie from michigan Andrea who did great!! skies were a bit hazy so views were softened a bit but still excellent as all summits in the clear in every direction..The view overlooking the Bonds down to Carrigain Notch one of my favorites..we waved at another OTHH group doing the Bonds today and marveled at their good fortune..
