Date of Hike: 5/16/2009 , 5/17/2009
Trail Conditions: On Saturday, the lower crossing of the Gale River Trail could be crossed if you searched upstream a ways for suitable stepping stones. I took off my boots for both crossings. After the rain Saturday night, the water at the lower crossing was up to about mid-thigh on our way out to the car. Gale River Trail has a few patches of snow near the top, but none that you need to walk on.
Garfield Ridge Trail from Gale River Trail to Galehead Hut had deeper snow in parts, but it was mostly firm.
Twinway from Galehead Hut to South Twin had 1-2 feet of snow in parts, but almost no postholing. Much of the trail here was dry.
North Twin Spur was by far the worst trail. Deep snow with a hard crust that we often punched through 2 feet or so resulting in cut up legs.
Frost Trail to Galehead was almost snow free and posed no problems.
Special Equipment Required: None.
