As a trailed peak with a parking lot on a paved state highway, I was saving this one for snow or mud season. As it turned out the lot wasn't plowed, but with only a couple inches of snow I drove in anyway. After seeing recent tracks I decided to wear my lightweight rubber boots which were perfect for conditions.

After crossing a swampy area the trail climbs steeply uphill for a while. One version of the trail is marked with cairns and one with orange survey flagging, they sometimes run together and sometimes interweave. I went up the way the previous tracks did which was sometimes each way, and had intended to go down the other way but the splits weren't as obvious downhill and I missed them. Halfway up was an annoying set of what I call pseudo-switchbacks, where the trail runs level or downhill for awhile before a steep climb to another level section. The flagging and tracks ended at the first bump where there were a bench and register, but I wandered on to the second where the cairn wasn't on the highest spot and the views of Monadnock are obstructed even in winter.
