The annual halloween hike started out great and continued throughout the weekend. Tradition calls for a friday night hike in. The group met at base camp on the Garfield Trail. After settling in, the kielbasa sticks were sharpened and the feasting began. The sky was crystal clear with many stars twinkling down on us. We continued in the tradition of fine food and drink with sausage and canadian bacon bagels for breakfast. We left base camp around 8:00am. The Garfield trail was a bit muddy and wet in places. Fist pockets of snow were seen at about 3400ft. We didn't get to real snow on the trail until just below the junction with the Garfiled ridge trail. The scramble up to the summit did not require crampons or snow shoes. We were the only ones on the summit when we arrived. Several groups later arrived at the summit. We took in all the warm sun and somewhat hazy views for a bit longer than normal due to the great weather. We finally dedcided to retreat back to base camp. The hike down was a little wetter due to the melting snow. Home made pasta and suace joined with sausage and venisom meatballs made up the main course. A couple glasses of wine and we had our fill. Early to bed and a short hike out sunday morning concluded another fantastic weekend in the whites. I can't wait for next years halloween hike.
