Gale River Road was open from N. end. Water crossings easy rock hop. Lower third of trail a carpet of leaves. Traces of snow starts at burnt knoll, 2800 feet.

Off trail there may be an inch of snow, on trail it is packed with a mix of earth and rocks. A couple of easy to get around ice patches mainly on the switch backs.

Top third more packed snow but very little ice and the G.Ridge 2/10ths ice free, but that could change with rain.

Gear: Light winter gear. I did not find traction necessary.

Comments: Ceiling was about 5,500 feet. The cloud formations were really interesting. The shading was ethereal and there were seldom seen shades of orange over the Franconia Ridge to the west.
