This webpage offers commuters modest rewards for carpooling, and they are pretty lenient about what they consider carpooling. Their FAQs pretty much say that it applies no matter where you are heading (hiking!), and even with someone you live with.
They also reward walking or cycling to work, riding a bus, and tele-commuting.
