The GMNF is proposing to replace the Lost Pond Shelter which burned down last year. It will be interesting to see if any environmental groups oppose it, or whether they fear that will prevent additional Wilderness designation in VT.

Are either of these active issues? Ie, have there been such statements made by such groups?

My recollection is that the trail along here where the shelter was is parallel to the Big Branch Wilderness and another trail, thus there are wilderness and non-wilderness options from and to the same points in that area.

The Lost Pond Shelter burned down sometime in late 2001 or early 2002. Here's a photo taken in June of 2002:

That is unless they rebuilt it and it burned down again???

This particular shelter is located in the midst of Wilderness although there is a snowmobile corridor to the E where the LT used to go:

PB, the FS says 11/06 but I can't say who is right:

I Googled it and yes, it has burned down twice since 2001!

I would say it's a poor candidate for replacement , wilderness or not! Seems like an active gang of local arsonists (aka drunk local teens).

I was going to say that 2001 didn't seem right since una_dogger & I stopped there last summer!

And yes, I had it backwards - the trail on the east side, past Old Job Shelter, is the one outside the wilderness area while this one is within.

Two burndowns in 6 years ... yeah, I have to say that's pretty suspect.
