I want to snowshoe goodnow this friday. How is the trail? Is it well traveled enough so it is packed down? I ask becouse my dog could not plow though the snow unless it is packed.

Goodnow probably well packed

Yes, I think Goodnow will be a fine trip for you and your pooch. In addition to whatever regular usage the trail gets this time of year, a class of ~20 students from the AEC went up it on Thursday, so I'm sure they did a heck of a job packing the snow down. Some did not have snowshoes either, I believe, and they made it just fine.

I am curious if the Goodnow Firetower is in the Vanderwacker Wild Forest Area?

Goodenow Mt is not in the Vanderwacker Wild Forest Area -- according to http://www.newcombny.com/recreation.htm, it's in the Huntington Wildlife Forest and maintained by the SUNY College of Environmental Forestry.
