Adding more trails to Google-Earth seems like a good project for many folks on this list!

Based on the article, it sounds like the layer consisting of the hiking trail information was not generated by Google, but rather by Trimble. Different companies and organizations can generate their own information layers for use with Google Earth, without Google having to lift a finger.

Finding these additional layers, however, is not always easy. You generally have to go to that organizations website and download the file yourself. Google has simply added the Trimble data to their "featured content" catalog, allowing users to easily find that data.

In NY, the DEC has made available a lot of information for google earth for some time.

Thanks to Neil's recent post, I've been searching Acme Mapper lately. "Find" the location and the Topo tab shows the trails. looks pretty complete, but I might being missing something. http://mapper.acme.com/

In some places it's great, but in others, the trails are out of date. No, I won't be more specific...
