On Saturday we did Algonquin. Or rather, most of Algonquin. After about 15 minutes above treeline we said forget this and headed back down:
While it was still a nice hike, we were looking forward to the beautiful weather on Sunday and doing Gothics. We were moving slower than usual on Algoquin, so we set out a little earlier on Sunday. We started from the St. Huberts parking lot at 6:45 and the morning light was really beautiful. We did an up and back on the trail from Lake Road. Once on the trail, we bare booted for about an hour, then put on our snowshoes (it was great conditions for them). With the relentless uphill, it was nice to have so many pretty things to look at ... the views, the snow covered trees, etc. There were only a few places here and there that required some effort to get over chunks of ice. Except for another party at the register and some deer, we didn't see anybody else on the trail (which surprised us, but was nice). We had a wonderful hike - it was one of the most beautiful days in the mountains we've had ... gorgeous weather, scenery, and views (pictures by Steve):
All our pictures are here.
As it turns out, Cindy (Snickers) was next door to us at the Ark Trail Inn. We descended Algonquin with her and had dinner together on NYE night. It's the second person we've run in to after the Catskills gathering. Pleasant surprises.
