Last year during the month of May, I got together with 2 hiking buddies JohnS and Meri for a mid-week trip to Galehead Hut during the short self-service season for that Hut. We did that trip as a “Gourmet Hut Trip”. All of us were either unemployed or between jobs at the time. The trip was such a success that I decided it would be fun to give it another shot this year.

With all my weekends pretty much filled up till October, I began to wonder if a Gourmet Hut Trip would be possible this year since work was going to keep me from a mid-week trip. The only possible weekend that was still during self-service and that didn’t already have a graduation, wedding or training planned was Memorial Day Weekend and I had initially promised my VERY patient boyfriend that I would reserve that weekend for just him and noone else. He thinks I do too much and has been so very patiently waiting for me to actually give him some alone time.

Well no matter what he thought of me taking away that one “free” weekend he said “Okay” and that was all that I needed to get the ball rolling. Thank you Brian :D

So, I booked the 16 spots available at Greenleaf for Saturday and Sunday nights of Memorial Day Weekend and sent out my usually mass email to those on my email lists. I figured I’d cancel any spots left before the deadline. Surprisingly, all 16 spots were booked up within a week and all we had to do was wait for the weekend to arrive.

In the following few weeks I began to put together a menu for the meals I’d prepare (I collected money from all involved to cover grocery costs). An Indian meal was a given but when I mentioned that, Darren (the troublemaker/moderator) challenged me to a tougher meal . . . he claims cooking a full Indian meal is not a challenge for an Indian woman so he asked for a Thai night. Well, I am never one to back down from a cooking challenge SO I began using Brian as a guinea pig for my Thai recipe experiments and finally a menu came together for the 2 nights at the Hut.

Much agonizing and shopping ensued and this culminated in a 10 am meeting time on Saturday morning at the Trailhead to the Old Bridle Path where I proceeded to hand out the individually packed grocery bags to each person going on the trip. Everyone was in great spirits and had plenty of spirits packed in their packs. By 11am, most everyone was on the trail up to Greenleaf Hut in groups of 3-4.

Brian and I brought up the rear after making sure all the food was safely on its way up. Once at the Hut, the laughing and joking and drinking began in earnest. The weekend brought great hiking with the group splitting into 3-4 smaller groups and hiking both left and right on the ridge :) meaning we had hikers bagging everything from Liberty to Garfield and all in between. I spent Sunday taking a long nap and being lazy because I was exhausted from the cooking on Saturday and still had Sunday meal coming up. I am sorry I missed meeting Guy who had stopped by the Hut but I was safely tucked into my sleeping bag . . .

As far as the non-hiking fun we had a Thai night on Saturday with Shrimp Tom Yum Soup and Chicken and Shrimp Pad Thai followed by cookies and chocolate and lots of wine, I believe I don’t remember all of the night. We had so much food that we must have fed atleast another 10 hikers in the Hut, in addition to our 14 person group.

On Sunday, we had our Indian meal with Onion Sambhar (Indian lentil soup), Biriyani Rice, white rice and Chicken Tikka Masala. Once again plentiful quantities allowed for us to feed the ENTIRE Croo and volunteers and still leave them with enough food to keep them happy for lunch the next day.

It was a fabulous weekend . . . I can’t THANK everybody enough for helping and making it such a GREAT success . . . I already have requests for next year :)

I will leave the others to give trail condition updates and post pictures which I know are plentiful. THANK YOU guys for making this so much fun and THANK YOU Brian for being so understanding and sharing our alone weekend with 12 VFTTers and numerous strangers

Sounds likea great trip and wonderfull tradition. However, I will never let my son read this post. I was a chef for 15 years +/-. So when I am on an outing food is pure sustenance ie cous cous and tuna froma pouch. He is demanding I kick it up a notch.

Seema + Brian - you guys out did yourselves!!! Awesome planning and cooking. We had such a great time and the food was incredible. Can't wait to get some more. I'll take a mix of the two when you come over to cook - Onion Sambhar Soup and Pad Thai. Now that would be a very cool multi-cultural combo!

I only had the time last night to quickly go through my photos. It looked like I got a few real nice keepers. I am super busy this week, but I hope to post some of them by the end of the week.

Once again, a big THANK YOU to Seema and Brian and of course to Pat for carrying up 67 pounds of onions.

Seema made so much Pad Thai that it looked like we would all be eating it for the next 3 days. :D I never thought we would manage to empty the bowl. For those of you who weren't there - the bowl of Pad Thai was HUGE!!!! Beyond HUGE!!!! It was piled high in a big mixing bowl and after the 14 of us had filled our plates, it looked like we had barely made a dent in it.

The food was wonderful - thank you so much Seema and Brian. It was a great idea. The company was great, as well. I mean, you couldn't have asked for more - great food, great company, great hiking, great weather (well, almost), great location, and lots of wine and single malt scotch.

There were even five of us who decided to continue the food fest at the Woodstock Station after hiking out on Monday. (As if we hadn't had enough to eat already that weekend :D ).

Can't wait to do this again next year. (hint, hint, hint)

Oh - and I second that thank you to Pat for carrying 67 pounds of onions.

Thanks, Seema and Brian. You guys are the greatest. You could not have planned a better weekend.

Do we really have to wait till next year?

Seema,
My mouth waters just thinking about it! Sounds like a fantastic time and great trip report. I hope I (maybe we) can join you next year...and thanks for looking out for me and any potential stalkers! It was a beautiful weekend, wasn't it?

I (Guy) couldn't do an overnight due to having 4 week old - but my wife is gracious enough to let me get some day trips in since I need the training for rainier later this summer - anyway I regress - nice meeting some of you folks on the ridge (reconize some of the faces from the pics - darren, littlebear, (darrens girlfreind - sorry forgot your name ) etc..

I was asking everyone how the meal was and if Seema was at the hut so I could stop by say hi to one of my rainier buddies.

anyway - everyone said the food was amazing and I wish I could joined the entire trip - buy hey - maybe next year.

After this report, I really can't let my family read VFTT, since too often on our trips my kids correctly ask, "So what is Dad adding water to this time?"

Your trip report has inspired me to change that.

The weekend brought great hiking with the group splitting into 3-4 smaller groups and hiking both left and right on the ridge meaning we had hikers bagging everything from Liberty to Garfield and all in between.

I hiked Garfield on Sunday with a friend, fully expecting to see the Garfield contingent on the summit, as we discussed it before the weekend. My hiking partner and I arrived early--11:40ish and hung out about an hour without any sign of our friends. As we were getting chilled, we decided to head back down--and given the sounds of thunder, were glad we did. It was a fine hike.

I thought perhaps, given the weather, the VFTT crew decided not to come over. Until I spoke with Mr. Metsky, who was in fact, on the summit THE SAME TIME we were. Apparently, they arrived at about 12: 15 ish. We were dozing in the sun in front of the summit structure where I was sure we could easily be spotted. Apparently Dave even walked around one side and chatted with the group sitting just behind us. Yes, he was a mere 5 feet from me, and somehow failed to spot my reclining form.

You would think that after all the hiking we've done together, he might recognize my gear--if not me? Perhaps? But no, it was not to be. After chatting briefly with those folks, Dave and his crew left the summit about 10 minutes before we did.

Another missed opportunity in the Whites. I even had chocolate. :p :D

Sounds like you folks had a GREAT time! Glad the weather held out for you. :D

Which is more dangerous to the psyche, jealousy or envy????
Sounds like a great trip....

(Seema, I think Brian is a keeper!)

What a weekend! I could not keep my eyes open past 9 pm either night. Thank you Thank you Seema and Brian!

Oh, and Pat says to tell everyone that was 175 pounds of onions.

It was pure luxury to hike over to Little Haystack and back without any need to hurry, at least till the first thunderclap, which turned out to be just a little sound and no fury at all. Lots of flowers from the trailhead to the first Agony, but nothing brewing yet on the ridge. Dave did report seeing some Diapensia just coming into bud at the lower northern end of the Lafayette ridge.

Mmmmmmm. That soooo beat my chicken noodle soup. I'm glad you had a fantastic time, and in a way, Seema and Regular Brian were with us up on Spaulding even while with all of you at Greenleaf ... ;)

Ah yes, now I remember. There was some food.

Seema was an amazing organizer, cook, cheerleader, weather arranger, and wearer of the piggy pants. A wonderful way to spend Memorial Day weekend with a great group of people, wonderful food, and the mountains we all love.

Sorry about missing Brenda on the summit of Garfield, I'm still kicking myself for not spending another 2 minutes looking around.

More pictures on the way.

Wonderful pictures Darren and Dave !!!

Where are the rest of you with your pictures. I know there were quite a few pictures taken as I tried to hide my hot, sweaty, tired and disgusting looking self from all those cameras :)

As I sit here looking at those pictures I can tell my respiratory illness was already in my system as early as Saturday, I look like someone tied me to the back of a truck and drove to the Whites. The food does look yummy, wish I had some of it now.

Arturo and I printed the 2 pictures of Wendy with the Pad Thai bowl, the before and after shots and put them up in our hallway at Beth Israel with a sign that said "Wanted for Gluttony" :)

Funny stuff, great time and since I've had a half dozen emails asking about next year, I guess the tradition shall indeed become an annual one :)

Keep those pictures coming, where are the ones from Sunday?

Here are mine from Saturday

Sorry, no captions, you'll have to figure them out for yourselves until I get organized. I'm working on Sunday now.

Great pictures, everyone! I feel as if I'd been there (only without the full tummy).

Tell me - did anyone *not* take a picture of painted trillium this past weekend? :)
