Greeley Ponds Trail to East & Main Peak Osceolas
Date of Hike: 2-21-09
Trail Conditions: Trail nicely stamped out all the way to East Peak. Snow was light and dry…beautiful for snowshoeing. A few blowdowns but each one was easily bypassed. Between 8-15 inches of virgin snow covered the trail from East Peak to Main Summit, so we broke trail on the last mile out.
Special Equipment Required: We donned snowshoes and kept them on all day, except for when we climbed the Chimney…..used crampons for that.
Comments: On our way up we passed about 8 telemark skiers hanging out near the summit of East Peak. On our return we passed 3 guys wearing crampons heading for the main summit…..they were punching some deep holes in the trail. Lots of folks skiing and snowshoeing around the ponds today.
Fairly overcast to start the day, but we were treated to some decent views out towards the Tripyramids and the Hancocks on our way back. Temps probably in the single digits throughout the hike.
