I was hiking with a group last Sunday and one of the members dropped her water bottle more than once. Not unusual, because I do it (all the time!) but it got me thinking: Many of us use the aluminum bottles now and may be finding them slippery when wearing mittens. My solution? Take an old bicycle tire inner tube and cut a 4 inch piece (like a elastic band) out of it to slip onto my bottle to help me hold onto it.

This is a short-term problem and solution, as in the coming months my aluminum bottles will be too cold for me to drink from. But for now...it helps to have an inexpensive gripper.

In the days before bungie cords, tie wraps, and velcro straps were available, and when I was riding an off-road enduro motorcycle (a Bultaco Alpina and Ossa Pioneer), we used cut-offs from old tire inner tubes to keep things like map tubes and water bottles attached to the cross-bars on the handle bars.

I had thought of that, but the inner tube ring could be removed and reused if needed, on the trail, on the pack, or elsewhere. ;)
