We started out Friday night & left a car at Lincoln Woods and continued to Twin Mtns.
Sat. morning after a good hot breakfast we started up Zealand Rd to Hale Brook Trail. The road was very icy, but we were able to catch the sides and bare boot it. Four of us started out for the long traverse enjoying the warm weather in hopes that it stayed with us.
Up over Hale with pretty strong wind at the summit, and enough post holing to bring out the snowshoes for the hike down to Zealand Hut for lunch and to bid our friend Tom goodbye. He was heading home early due to a family issue. Now we had 3 to push up Zeacliff, Zealand Mtn. and over to Guyot Shelter for the night. After being sick the last 10 days there was quite a bit of wheezing and coughing going on....
Our goal was to get over Guyot Ridge and to the shelter before dark. The winds over the ridge were strong and knocked us around, as we slowly crossed over, stopping every few minutes to dig our feet in for the next gust. I thought I was going to blow away a couple times. That's when I was wishing that I had a few more pounds in my pack or on me. (not my normal thought process!). Crampons needed!
Finally over the ridge down into the trees. Looking for the Guyot Shelter... no tracks or markings. Thankfully the guys had an idea from previous trips. Deep snow again brought the snowshoes out and my thoughts now were dreading the hike up and out in the AM..
The shelter was wonderfull, cozy and warm thanks to the tarp that we hung over the opening. Brian was thinking ahead yeh! The moon was bright, and the weather stayed warm. Sleeping bag & bivy were more than enough!
Morning brought a beautifull sunrise viewed right from my sleeping bag. We packed up and headed up over West Bond.
The winds were blowing but after leaving West Bond summit we hiked out of the winds and enjoyed a warm and hard packed tracks over to Bond & Bondcliff.
The skies stayed clear for our views in all directions, and the winds were mild for us. We enjoyed our last of our 5 summits before we headed down the long trail to Lincoln Woods.
We almost made it out before the rain, but it caught up to us with only a few miles left. Sprinkles started and kept us moving with only a couple short breaks for my shoulders...
