Sorry 'bout tha Sega referrence there! Anyway, I had the good fortunate of getting out both days of this beautiful weekend. After accompanying Sadie as she made further progress on her 48 the day before, I was fine with taking things down a notch and shifting into "low gear" on Sunday. On this day, Shamie and I took out a group of folks who are fairly new to hiking. It was kind of funny heading up to Hedgehog (2,532') since I was on Passaconaway the day before and the two are so close, but with its great views, interesting trail and modest climb, it was a good choice.

We met at the trail head at 10am, waited a little bit for a couple of other folks who we never saw, and then headed up. The trail starts out on an old logging road which is also used as a cross country ski trail. We passed the first leg of the loop and continued on to do the loop in a clockwise fashion. The woods were very open and it was quite bright and warm. Some in our group were wishing that the leaves had already come out to provide a little shade but I reminded them that the views wouldn't be as good. After a little bit of steeper climbing, we reached the Eastern Ledges where we took some pictures and enjoyed a little bit of scrambling. The views were just great.

As we skirted our way around the south face of the mountain, we could see the cliffy looking summit and people wondered how we were going to get up there. I told them that often things look really far away but then in no time you fine yourself there. Sure enough, after dipping down a bit and thenclimbing up a bit more, we reached the summit which is marked with a yellow "X" in a yellow circle. We stopped here for lunch and more pictures. There is another ledge on a very short side path to the northwest of the summit that shouldn't be missed.

After a very enjoyable break there, we continue on down. We made the detour to take in one last ledge, "Allen's Ledge" on our way down. A little bit later, after passing under a large blowdown, I realized that I had lost a 16oz Nalgene that had my trail mix in it. I probably left it on the summit. Oh well. it could have been worse. I could have lost my camera!

The rest of the way down was a very pleasant woods walk and we all enjoyed the fine weather and views through the trees. Back at the cars, we saw that the temp was in the 70s. We knew that was what it felt like but since it was only forcasted to be in the low 60s, it was still a surprise. We also saw a note from one of the people we had waited for. She had gotten a little turned around and missed the trail head on top of already running a little late.

Still, it was nice to do this shorter hike (4.8mi RT), check out the views I'd heard about, and share this experience with some folks new to the mountains.

Here are my pics.

"Sonic Hike" - best TR title since "I've seen fire and I've seen rain" Glad I'm not the only one who makes up corny alias' for mountains, such as the Billy-Pugsly-Weezie-Casius-Denzyl-Marilyn-Hawkeye traverse I did a few years back, or the Tito-Popadopulus loop hike back in October

in all reality, glad it went well

Such a neat little mountain with extremely unique views (The Captain)....I hiked this last October after our heavy snowfall and there was a foot of snow at the summit....and nothing at the bottom. In fact, foliage was still at peak at the trailhead. The whole loop was very nice, and I look forward to taking it again sometime. Very nice pics.
