I just got back from Georgia where I had the pleasure of getting Hikethe115 started on her long journey!
We flew down to Atlanta on 3-16-07 (barely getting out before the storm!!) and checked into the Hiker Hostel for the evening. We had time to spare so we dashed out and snagged Brasstown Bald, Georgia's high-point. It was cold, windy and foggy so we had no views from that top !
Saturday morning we started out on Springer Mountain on a very cold and windy morning. (I had called Hikethe115 the night before leaving for Georgia asking her to talk me out of bringing my winter gear. She very sweetly convinced me that I'd be in the South, and Spring had come... Needless to say, she got an earful about my having only a 20 degree bag!) There was a very large crowd on top of Springer. Looks like the AT will be busy this year! We did about 11 miles that first day, passing by the first leanto (and the crowds there) and camping off-trail.
After a COLD night (you remember, the whole 20 degree bag thing...) we spent the next morning in our tents hanging out and avoiding getting out of the sleeping bags. But the day did warm up and was a perfect hiking day. Spring has started to blossom in Georgia, the dogwood, forsythia, and dafodils have all opened up, but it is still early Spring in the woods. Some flying bugs were hanging around but nothing too bothersome. The second night we camped at Woody Gap and got to hang out around a big fire with a bunch of other hikers. We wound up doing about 11 miles each day, getting into Neel Gap on Monday afternoon, in time for an all-you-could-eat pasta dinner.
We met some very nice thru hikers (Montana and Spooner are the trail-names they're trying on) and day-hikers as well, along the way. And a few wierdos as well. OK, I'll be nice, not wierdos but characters... While Hikethe115 is going solo, it appears she'll always have the option of good company. She's hiking strong (both physically and psychologically) and having a great time! HERE'S TO YOU DAWN !! Here's the link to Dawn's Trail Journal
I took the long way back to the airport and snagged Sassafras Mountain, South Carolina's high-point . Here's an early warning... If the bugs fly North, we may be in for a tuff Spring. While on the AT, the bugs weren't a problem, while I was hiking around Sassafras, the black flies were biting !
Here's a photo of Dawn and I at the start of the AT hike...
