Malden Island is in a chain of 5 islands off the eastern edge of Georgetown, a few miles north of Reid State Park.

How tragic, and very brave and commendable for this stranger to have taken the initiative to try to save his life, aparently at a risk to her own.

Here's some more information, though not much more, from the Burlington [Vermont] Free Press.

Malden Island

Malden Island is actually two small islands located about 500 yards from the lobster wharf in the tiny village of Five Islands, ME. Malden was a summer church community with a common dining hall and various cabins for lodging. I was partially raised in Five Islands and remember hearing the singing of hymns before their evening meals in the 40s and 50s. I visit "Five" a couple of times a year and it appears that "Malden" is still an active summer church community. The two islands are linked by a footbridge. There are lots of high "cliffs" around the island with fissures and big rock faults. The wharf at "Five" has a place that will cook Lobsters and stuff that you can eat at wooden tables on the dock or scattered around the area. This is a place that is stuck in the 1940s, and it is worthwhile to visit. IMHO
