Hiking in southern India--near Ooty

I'll be in India in mid-January and doing a little hiking/hill walking out of Ooty, which is an old hill station in southern India.

I've done research online and got some idea of what the hiking might be like, but I'm wondering if any of you VFTTers have had personal experience in the area?

One thing I've read about is the possibility of leeches glomming onto you on the trail! A bit different than our New England pests.

Any info or insights would be great!
