On September 11th 2010 Donna and I hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail from Route 16, a couple of miles north of the Mason Dixon Line, to Forge Road. We haven’t hiked this section for at least 20 years.

There was only one car at the Route 16 parking lot when we pulled up at a little before 10 am; but, we anticipated seeing a good many hikers on the trail because of the cooler temperatures.

Crossing over Route 16 we headed north along a slightly rocky level path. We crossed over Mentzer Gap road and in no time at all we were at the Deer Lick Shelter, where we enjoyed a “super cinnamon” bagel.

Because of the dry weather we’ve experienced lately the creek near the shelter was bone dry.

Along the way we met Cosmo, a four year old beagle, who was doing a short hike with his owner.

There was only one moderately steep section we encountered which was about a mile from where we would end our hike at a local park within the Michaux State Park.

Here’s the link to the slideshow.
