Date of Hike: Dec. 30th, 2009
Route followed: (from Roaring Bk parking lot) route 73 north to Ausable river; Mossy Cascade Trail to Hopkins (#51), trail to Green-Giant col and then to summit of Giant (#52), Roaring Brook Trail (#47).
Trail Conditions:
- Mossy Cascade Trail to Hopkins: from 1 to 4inches of powder over medium packed trail, more snow where wind blows.
- trail to Green-Giant col and then to summit of Giant: trail now broken by one fellow through 3-12 inches of powder, steep pitches a bit hard to ascend as usual in winter. Some blowdown between Hopkins and Green-Giant col.
- Roaring Brook Trail (#47): well packed trail (an expressway), hard on descent at lower altitude (not enough snow cover, some icy spots).
Special Equipment Required: as would say Pinpin: please use snowshoes. Poles useful, crampons or micro spikes not necessary.
Comments: I think I was the only one having climbed on this side of Giant since at least a week. This trail is fairly easy to follow (good markings and path obvious). Met 8 fellows during descent on Roaring Brook Trail and noticed 4 backpacks left at corner of trail going to Rocky Peak Ridge (broken). Started at oaking Brook parking lot at 8:40, arrived at Hopkins at 10:30, at GReen-Giant col at 12:15 and at top of Giant at 2:00PM.
