For reasons I cannot comprehend, I'm trying to build up courage to repeat the foolishness of hiking the Devil's Path and biking back to the start in a day. I failed 2/3 of the way through the bike ride last year. A few weeks ago, I did the first half (Prediger Rd. to Stony Clove) without much problem. Yesterday it was Stony Clove to Spruceton - starting up Hunter Mt. at Becker Hollow to avoid the steep ride to Notch Lake parking lot at the end of the day.
The trail is in pretty good shape - some very muddy sections along the flats on Hunter and Westkill - and a fair amount of easily negotiated blowdown. I stupidly did not get underway until 1:30 p.m. With 6 hours of hiking and 2 hours of biking, I was riding in the dark for awhile. Luckily, it was Sunday night without a lot of traffic.
