We are staying at Dix Pond Leantoo and are thinking of a bushwhack from Hunters Pass to Dial Mtn Trail. Does anyone know if one exists or if it is possible? It looks like a contour line connects the two which implies you can skirt between the two without a large ascent.

Captain,

The area you would be going through was hit very hard by Hurricane Floyd in 99. From the summit of Hopkins, I've seen large tracts of woods that are laying down in that area. I would check the route with someone who's been there before committing.

An alternative would be to hike the trail along the Boquet to Gravestone Brook (NW Tributary), and then go up to the Bear Den - Dial ridge there, and then take the trail back to Dial. It's a lot longer, but it's a clean route, and it might be faster if the blowdown is bad the other way.
