I started by the tail and then biked over the head and down the nose.. Or actually the ride was probably profiled like a cat. I drove about 25 minutes to Lanesborough to the Mt Greylock visitor's center on the Rockwell Road and parked my car and got out my Salsa, complete with pannier and a clean shirt and a book and my camera. Started up the road this morning on a mission to bike up Mt Greylock and loop around through Williamstown and New Ashford back to my car. Some trips I read it would be about 35 miles though my bike computer is not reliable right now. The road is really primo shape having have been repaved about 2 years ago or so. really nice.. The first 2 miles is somewhat rolling hills, then finally you hit the one campground and then the road starts to really climb, a few switchbacks and then you're at the summit.. Spent most of the climb in the 34x21 or the 34-24 just because not knowing the climb, wanted to take it easy... The only really somewhat steep parts are at the beginning and then just below the summit but this route I believe is not as brutal as the route from North Adams of which I would descend.
I got to the summit just when the park rangers were raising the flag so I got a shot of them with the flag raised and the skies were clear and great views, you can see some windmill farms which are new and wasn't there the last time I hiked my cat.. i mean Greylock. Met a guy who passed me on the way up in a road bike and we chatted a bit before he took off. I didn't go inside bascom lodge cause they seem to dislike bike cleats even though mine are MTB shoes and are recessed, didn't want to cause trouble..
The descent down into North Adams is fun!!! Wheeeeeee, steeper than the southern road, I can see why they TT that side... nice and fun switchbacks to bike... Then I hung a left onto Rt 2 and took Route 43 past some Williams College Co-Eds and hit 7 South which is wide shoulder back to my car..
