. . . A blooming Corpse Flower. However, when’s the next time you’re going to be in Sumatra?

Instead head on up to Laconia, NH to see a blooming Corpse Flower. According to Dr. Lou Ricciardiello, who has raised this plant, there have been a little over 100 blooms of the Corpse Flower ever seen, and we’re lucky enough to have one blooming right here, right now in Laconia, NH!

It started blooming just today, Monday 8-21 around 2:45 p.m. It does have a foul odor to it but won’t be at max odor until later tonight. The odor dissipates quickly along with the blooms so visit soon.

If you have a chance, go see it.

Corpse flower to go on display

LACONIA—The botanical wonder that is the "corpse flower" goes on display today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lakeport Fire Station.

The 72-inch-tall plant, which can grow to 10 feet, is getting ready to bloom and, once it does, it will give off an odor of rotting flesh.

In its native Sumatra, the odor would attract various insects that would help pollinate the plant, whose scientific name is Amorphophallus titanum.

Louis Ricciardiello, DMD, who is an oral surgeon at Lakes Region General Hospital, has raised the plant, which has been dubbed "Tilly the Titan," from seed for four and a half years in his greenhouse.

Only recently did Ricciardiello discover that the plant would bloom, an event that has occurred only 14 times in the United States.

Ricciardiello has agreed to put "Tilly the Titan" on exhibit at the Lakeport Fire Station, which is located on Elm Street.

Admission to see the plant is $10; free parking is available across the street from the station at the Winnipesaukee Exposition Center.

Proceeds from the exhibition will benefit the LRGHealthcare Dental Resource Center and the children's programs sponsored by the Laconia Kiwanis Club.

The exhibition, depending on when the plant blooms, is scheduled to continue daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Aug. 28.

For those who cannot get out to Lakeport, but would like to track the flower's progress, go online to the website www.laconiaschools.org/corpseflower.
