I set out to run 100k in Virgil, NY and was able to pull it off! This was my first 100k (the race director allowed me to finish at the 100k point even though this was only a 50 or 100 mile race. I entered as a 50 miler, paid extra and got credit for doing 100k) I actually did really well and felt great for the first 50 miles! I finished the 50 miles in 11 hours 44 minutes. I pushed a bit to hard on the next 5.7 miles trying to beat the setting sun (I am afraid of being alone in the dark!). So, when I arrived at mile 55.8 and met Don where he would run the last 6.3 miles in the dark with me I was beat. He walked/jogged, but mostly walked with me the last 6.3 miles where I found the 100k aid station lit up with bright xmas lights, lots of food, and smiling faces! It was a great accomplishment! If anyone ever gets the itch to run an ultra, this is the one to do. It was by far the best run and nicest race I have ever done! The 62.1 miles took me about 14 hours and 37 minutes. (I am still waiting for my official finish time!) Total elevation gain was about 12,000 feet!
Don was a huge help at this race! He was at every aid station with a huge smile and a big hug (no matter how smelly I got!). He also talked me through the last 6 miles in the dark where we were guided by glow sticks hanging off the trees to keep us on the trail. He also was kind enough to drive me home from the race as I was unable to walk. Also, everyone who was cheering for me back home and following along online gave me the motivation to push through and keep smiling no matter how hard things got! It kept me strong until the very end! http://www.flickr.com/photos/kfolcik/sets/72157622299662205/
Anyway, the website for this race if you ever want to go is: http://www.iroquoistrails100.com/Index.aspx
This was the 2nd year for the race and it was excellent! Lots of climbing so this is definitely a course for people who love going up hills, like me! It is comparable to the pemi loop.
