I woke up that morning with a very sore body due to the Kilkenny Ridge traverse I did the previous day. Didn’t matter, the weather was perfect, little sunny, little cloudy, and winds strong enough to keep me alive. It took me a while before I decide how to do Isolation, I finally went for the loop over Glen Boulder and down Rocky Branch.

After an unexpected meeting with SpongeBob in the Glen Ellis Falls parking lot, I started hiking up with some pain in my left foot. But the trail is very smooth and nice, and as soon as I got on the first ledges, I got so excited about that hike above tree line I forgot about all discomforts.

While taking a break at the impressive Glen Boulder, three men started chatting with me. After few minutes we realized we knew each other, that was Marty from vftt, who always sent me good words about my artwork. What a pleasant surprise ! It’s a lot of fun to hike in the Whites, there’s always people around.

After I left them my pace was slowed by patches of fresh blueberries along the trail. I couldn’t resist, and I had to force myself to stop eating those little goodies. It was getting really cold, but I was well dress. That allowed me to take my time and enjoy the scenery. The grass is starting to turn orange up there, looks like Summer had already left the alpine zone.

Just before getting back into the woods, I took a long break on Davis Path. I had in my pack the best lunch you can have on the trail : cold pizza. That moment was the best of the day: I found a spot with just little wind, and the sun was warming me up. Isolation was sitting right in front of me and I could see the ridge I was about to walk.

Then I just went for it, cruising on a smooth pace without any bugs or people on the way. The summit was beautiful, and I took another break eating chips and chocolate. I also had a can of iced coffee. Great food for a great weekend of hiking !

The return was a long one. My foot was hurting, I was tired, I got tricked by two «false crossings», I lost the trail (for only five minutes, but that was enough to annoy me) near the campsites across Rocky Branch shelter, and that 0.9 mi ascent killed me. Time to rest !! I thought. Good thing that my very nice friend Motabobo was waiting for me at the end of that trail. I found him sleeping on the ground, on the mattress and in the sleeping bag, right in the parking lot !! I’ll post that picture soon :D

Great report Julie. You sure didn't look sore to me. We figured we would catch up with you before the end of Glen Boulder, but you were moving pretty good! We got close to you a couple of times and then one of us would either add or shed a layer. Then we would look and you were out of sight. Yeah, there were some nice, plump blueberries on that trail. Hard to pick them with mittens, though!

Rocky Branch can definitely be tricky, but I am glad you retraced your steps and completed the hike. It was nice that it was cool and breezy, because that can be a buggy trail.

Hope our paths cross soon :D

Great TR, Julie and nice to have met you at Glen Boulder. That campsite area on the Isolation Trail can be a very tricky place. Glad you successfully met your challenges that day. We certainly had ours.

Great TR Julie, I did the same hike last November and the
Glen Bulder trail and Davis Path had very good view. I was
not lucky as you and had to walk on the side of the road
in the rain to return to my van. My feet was wet due to
the last brook crossing with high water (over my knees).
And I return two more time to Isolation after that (december
2006 and February 2007). :) :)
