Roadtripper, Candy and I decided to try Isolation today. Got a fairly early start, stashed a bike at the Rocky Branch parking lot on Rte 16, drove on to the Glen Ellis Parking lot and started out on the Glen Boulder Trail.
The Glen Boulder trail is great! It starts on easy, but gets steep fast. After about a mile and half, we burst out into the treeline. After some easy scrambling, we were at the gigantic Glen Boulder and, although somewhat cloudy, we took in some amazing views in most directions. The only direction without views was north, as Washington and the Northern Presis were fogged in. Roadtripper took a few photos of Candy and I trying to move the boulder and upward we went.
After a bit, we tucked into some high scrub and then popped out above treeline again and got some more nice views. Loved the views of Boot Spur, in particular. Hope to do the Glen Boulder/Boot Spur loop soon! It was very windy and cold at this point and we instantly grabbed for wind layers, insulative layers, gloves and ear protection. After a quick lunch partially sheltered by a rock, we headed on to the Davis Trail Junction.
As we were cold, we hiked quite quickly down Davis, led by Candy the downhill racer, until below treeline and then headed to Isolation. During this time, Roadtripper and I had some interesting discussions on the Owl's Head controversy. Turns out we are both neutral on this one. We found the summit spur junction quite easily and went and tagged Isolation. Found another couple and a dog up there celebrating, as the man and his dog both finished their 48th in NH today!!!!!!!!!!
Headed down and then took the Isolation Trail. It was interesting, but rough. Lots of stream crossings that were easily negotiated. It was then on to the Rocky Branch Trail. which seemed endless. The only things of interest were some prankster ruffed grouse, that scared us silly on two occasions with their rapid wing flapping.
We finally finished up about 4:25 pm and ran into Mr. Dave Metsky and his friend Robin in the parking lot. They had gone on an AMC bushwhack with a large party. Roadtripper was able to get a ride from a guy in that party to the Glen Ellis Parking lot, thus avoiding a nasty uphill bike ride. Many thanks to that nice guy.
This hike makes #44 of 48 in NH for me and #55 of 67 in NE. I believe Roadtripper is up to #39 in NH and Candy is up to 7 or 8, but will be making major gains soon, I am guessing. I think she has the hiking bug.
Roadtripper and Candy, it was excellent hiking with you. Hope we get to do another hike soon! Thanks again for driving, Roadtripper. Regards, Marty
