Date of Hike: 2-20-10
Trail Conditions: Rocky Branch Trail had super hard packed snow from trailhead until just before the descent to the river and the junction with Isolation Trail. Recently fallen snow was several to 6 inches deep and loose along Isolation Trail up to Davis Path. Section of Davis Path to summit was hard packed again with drifting snow in spots. Quite a few blowdowns throughout the trip; all were easily overcome. Solid ice made for safe river crossings.
Special Equipment Required: Microspikes on Rocky Branch until we started our descent towards the river and Isolation Trail. Donned snowshoes just before we made that first river crossing and kept them on all the way to the summit and back.
Comments: Special thanks to the group of 4 whose trail-breaking we followed and benefited from all day. We would not have tagged the summit yesterday had it not been for their dead-on navigation! Big thanks to the gang of 4! Special hello to the one guy in that group whom we had met a couple summers ago at Galehead Hut. We informed him of Schorman Sr’s recent hiking injury and he asked us to pass along his wishes for a speedy recovery and return to the trails.
We started @ 9:25AM and finished @ 4:30PM. It may not be the Engine Hill Bushwhack, but anyone interested in hiking a fast and true route to the summit of Isolation, now’s the time.
