I headed north from Conn. early AM on Friday planning for my first solo hike on Jackson to commence at about 2 PM. When I arrived at Crawford Notch, I noticed the cold front making its way through the area and decided to wait out the rain in the comfort of my car. I headed up the Webster-Jackson trail hoping for the clouds to push out and make way for a great view at the top. The trail was wet and the people coming down were soaked through. One kid with his family put it best when I asked him how he was doing. At first, he replied, "good", almost like it was his normal response. Then he said, "actually, I'm soaked!". It was then that I was thankful for waiting out the front.
The sun came out shortly after I began. However, as soon as I got to the the thin trees near the top, clouds came in creating what Little Sister calls the "Scooby-Doo Effect". Humming the "Friday the 13th" sound effect to myself at this point made things a little freaky. Of course, the next thing I know is I'm jumping a mile because I saw a chipmunk cross my path. Darn imagination!!!
I made it to the top and met up with a friendly group coming over from the Mizpah Hut. Unfortunately, like Sherpette twice before me, my Jackson peak experience was ungulfed in a cloud. I passed on waiting for a view and broke down the trail. The wet rocks at the top drastically slowed down my pace. About fifteen minutes down from the top, the sun came back out and the clouds passed. Just another reason for me to go back up!
I decided to eat my sub (yes Brian, I brought a sub) on Bugle Cliff. That was relaxing and enjoyable, and finally some type of view!
Overall, it was a nice first solo climb, minus the lack of view. With the weather clearing up, I was looking forward to my Saturday hike on Adams.
