Let's just say it all started to go bad late Friday night as i drove home from work and a black cat ran across my exit ramp...hey i didn't hit it so what's up.
I departed Enfield Sat afternoon after watching my sons hockey game otherwise known as ..how many pucks can get by our goalie-game!. I thought a 1 0r 2 o'clock departure would be safe for travel as SURELY EVERYONE would have already headed north for assorted activities by this time.
Traffic seemed a little heavier than i expected, but it seemed to improve after northhampton and deerfield exits....than it began. 7 miles of back up to Greenfield. I quickly made an illegal u-turn, headed back to Deerfield and did the round about avoidance of the jam....maybe this is where my karma went bad. Or maybe it was the derogatory remarks about drivers from certain states that i posted the night before
I arrived at my destination in NH without further incident, and set about planning a carbo load dinner and early bedtime, for an appropiate departure Sunday am to go north to Jay.
Left about an hour after i planned, but what the heck. I was making good time up I-91...watching out for scores of deer everywhere. I would top out on some of the hills above the fog and get glimpses of the incredible clear blue sky awaiting me for me hike...i thought out loud about what an incrediblely perfect day it was going to be.
Fives mile south of ST J, i see a white cloud behind my vehicle...and i think...oh wow i'm kicking up evaporation from the wet roads just getting hit by the sun....until i see my temperature guage absolutely pegged above H!!!!!
Slam the heater on full blast..open the windows...get to the breakdown lane and begin to coast..manual transmission. Luckily, it was mostly downhill to ST J.
I spent 3 hours at an Irving station...super nice girls working there. I must have made 100 phone calls. Sunday...beginning of bow season in VT...no one to service a car or even make a good guess, no rent a cars open in case i had to leave my car at the closed Subaru dealership...and my family 3 hrs away in CT....I'M HAVING FUN NOW!!!
One tow truck driver eventually stopped by and we looked it over and long story short...still don't know what made it over-heat...going to mechanics tomorrow...but i was able to limp it back to WRJ area, then back to CT on tuesday.
I didn't make Jay, nor did i make Speck for my promised hike to my son on Monday.
We did on Tuesday manage a short hike up and down Black Mtn in the Benton range near Moosilauke which will be my next post...atleast there was some salvaging of the long weekend that had perfect weather...how often has that happened on C-Day wkend?????????????????????
bummed, but still happy...ctsparrow
