Date of Hike: 06/21/2011
Trail Conditions:
**Jefferson Notch Road still closed. Repairs were underway to shore up washed-out spots on the day of the hike.***
Parked at Base Road parking lot. Trails as follows;
Boundary Line Trail: Trail in rough shape. Many blowdowns, several with herd-path detours. Undergrowth is closing in as well. I am assuming this trail does not see much use. Did not have time today to do any clearing, unfortunately. Jefferson Notch road walk was clear except for dodging high-speed construction equipment.
Caps Ridge Trail: Looks like this trail was hit with quite a few nasty blowdowns over the winter, but someone has cleaned them up nicely. Wood shrapnel is plentiful on the lower trail but is easily walked over. Stretch below pothole rocks needs some brushing as the undergrowth is crowding into the trail severely. Caps and up are clear and easily traversed. Due to closed road, did not see a soul on this trail - unusual for a crisp, clear day.
Gulfside, Crawford Path, etc all perfect as usual. Ammo Ravine trail also in excellent shape, as was the parking lot connector.
Special Equipment Required: Bug Spray, Sunscreen, T-shirt, and lots of smiles. Tourist Repellent would have been handy at the top of the Rockpile.
Comments: Excellent day on the Presidentials. Light wind washed the bugs away, and the sun kept the day at the perfect temperature. Caps Ridge completely free of people was an interesting experience. Kirby's 21, 22, and #23.
