Jewell was packed and firm with hanging branches. I used snowshoes but it could be barebooted. Thanks to Roger, Rick B. and et al for providing the super highway bushwhack across the snow field and spruce just below and parallel to the Gulfside. Boy, did it save some time and elevation. It begins about 25 yards after clearing the treeline. Too bad the next snow will wipe it out. It should be made into a designated trail. It takes you right to the col just below the Sphinx Trail. Gulfside in good shape as per Rick B.'s post yesterday. I wore my snowshoes to the summit and back to the Jewell and then switched to Microspikes for the trip down. Crampons would have been an overkill today. I almost backed out of this one this morning after seeing how ugly everything looked. The mountain from the base station was totally socked in with thick fog and clouds. But as one climbed to over 5000 ft. the sun was shining and the sky was a dark blue. The peaks looked like islands in an ocean of clouds. Undercast, just like the Mt. Washington Observatory forecast had called for (why do I doubt them?). The temps felt really warm from the sun and there was hardly any wind at all, just a slight breeze on Jeff's summit. Nice taking with Eric Rathbun today. The cog station was filled with cars, but I think most of the action was on Washington and Monroe today.
