Been a long week...testing the knees, knowing that they will hurt but wanting to finish up before the Catskill dinner on 4/14....The plan... 5 days off, hike every other day...the 3 hikes left over are long for me 8-10 milers....knocked off 2 peaks on Thursday, another 2 peaks on Saturday and 1 left for the plan...Kaaterskill....mostly a 3 mile walk in, 1 mile bushwack up the ice and short side trip down for the view..
Marguerite volunteered to hike with me in the Catskills....she's working on her grid...35 peaks in every month of the year....as long as it takes...She's 65 years young and a 46r, 35r, and all of the other er's you can come up with....
It was a long boring old snowmobile road walk up with spots of ice...I read that this is a very wet area during the spring...
We got to the cairn , blue painted area to turn and start the semi bushwack up...crampons were needed....before that there was a beautiful flat area to walk through with the evergreens on both sides.....after the wack up the trail flattened out and I was at the summit....
After some pics we hiked down a little to the open ledge for wonderful views!...ate lunch, took pics and then headed back down....Marguerite showed me her glissading moves while I side stepped going down....we met a couple going up and they didn't have crampons. Marguerite told them that it would be very difficult if not impossible to get up the ledges....They also didn't seem to be dressed appropriately...even though the calendar says April, it's winter conditions up there...hope they made it out safely..
End result was I got my 5 peaks done with 1 left for the day of the dinner...probably a bad idea that I pushed myself....2 10 mile hikes with a day rest was ok...adding the third hike wasn't to smart...my knees and back are sore....everyone is right, the mountains will always be there...but....I don't have any more days off until mid August...that's way I pushed myself...pics below
