Date of Hike: 4/12/2009
Trail Conditions:
Lonesome Lake trail: Minimal postholing and easily done in Microspikes. Cold conditions made for a nice, solid base.
Fishin' Jimmy trail: Suprisingly not at all bad. There is some ice on the steeper sections (had a rather comical fall on the first little PUD), but it's all easily bypassable.
Kinsman Ridge trail to North and South Kinsman: Absolutely lovely. No monorail conditions given the frigid temperatures. A handful of blowdowns.
Kinsman Ridge trail over the Cannonballs: Much rougher going - the copious frozen posholes made for an interesting trip. Microspikeable, though caution should be taken on the steepish descents.
NE Cannonball to Cannon via the Kinsman Ridge trail: Heading down from NE Cannonball was no issue, but shortly after the junction with the Lonesome Lake trail... ICE, ICE, ICE. I'd say it was worse than when I hiked this same trail back in December. Although we had crampons, we still decided to bushwhack around the nastiest of the ice bulges.
Hi-Cannon trail to Cannon: Easy going, firm, packed...
Special Equipment Required: We were in Microspikes the entire time. Bring crampons if you're planning on attempting the KRT up to Cannon.
Comments: Very much winter conditions today - much harsher than all of the hikes I did in March... though still amazingly fun. We really lucked out on trail conditions given how cold it was!
Sincerely,
Miss LRiz
