While on Garfield the other day, I noticed a "hollow" on Lafayette that I'm sure people have noticed before.

Here is is:

Has anyone gone here? It's not on a list, I know. But, while I don't see blowdown/fir wave, it looks like it has the potential to be thick and nasty. So what, I guess. I bet there is something scary living in there. Hey, Redbeard... you free this weekend?

that's where black metal musicians retire to after their bands break up due to poor record sales:

That guy just looks like he has a lot of makeup on. Hardly enough to scare me. Just knowing that this guy, however, is dead makes me feel assured that there are no scary musicians lurking in this area.

C'mon -- it looks like it's the headwaters of Franconia Brook. The detail in this map is good. With all the peakbaggers here that have done Garfield, nobody has looked at this thing and wondered if the Wizard of Oz lives here or something!? I wish I had my binoculars with me that day -- it looks like a hole in the side of the mountain!

Just looks like a narrow cleft with a bluff on the S side on the (modern, 25K) topo. Consistent with the dark appearance given the lighting.

From your first photo, it looks like there might be a shelf (skidder road?) running from the Garfield Ridge Tr over to the top of the cleft. Looks like an "easy" bushwack. :)
