Up Old Bridle Path, Greenleaf to Lafayette, Franconia Ridge Trail to Lincoln, Little Haystack, down via Falling Waters
Date of Hike: 1/4/2009
Trail Conditions: For the most part, the entire loop is either hard packed-powder (below treeline) or mixed rock and ice (more rock than ice, above treeline.) Maybe two step-over blowdowns total. A few spots have some drifts 12-15" deep.
All stream crossings trivial - good snow/ice bridges or step-overs.
Special Equipment Required: Light traction is probably a very good idea, but I saw many with bare boots. Snowshoes took a ride on my pack, but most had none. Wore Microspikes to the hut, and crampons the rest of the way, although there is a lot of rock and little ice (80/20). Ed Microspiked the whole way around.
Comments: Cold, windy, but a beautiful undercast and by the time we reached Lincoln the views were fantastic - Lafayette had some blowing snow and clouds around its top.
