Lafayette 7-20-05
This is the first weekday opportunity I've had to get up to see if the cairn garden was still at Greenleaf hut. It was not. Came down and picked up the Littleton Courier, which by ironic coincidence was running this article about the long-gone cairn garden--with pictures, which are too small to post. (There was a very long thread about this earlier on VFTT with some pics by HikerBob.) Nevertheless, it was a gorgeous day, the first decent weather we've had in a week or more, the trails were quiet, and by noon or so the clouds lifted off Lafayette.
Impromptu rock garden is short-lived

07/20/2005 - LITTLETON—New York State resident Brad Turner sent the Courier these unusual photos taken June 3 at the site of the Appalachian Mountain Club's Greenleaf Hut on Mt. Lafayette in Franconia Notch.
"Here are three photos of what I take to be the most highly elevated rock garden in the Northeastern United States," he wrote in his e-mail. Turner said he was told that the "cairn-savvy staff" at the hut created the artwork in their spare time.
The crew at the Appalachian Mountain Club's Greenleaf Hut on the shoulder of Mt. Lafayette in Franconia Notch shows what can be done with an abundance of rocks—make a rock garden! The fun project evolved into several unique designs.
Turner has spent summers on Forest Lake since he was a child in the early '60s and said he continues to return to the area to hike the high peaks and visit friends in Littleton.
At AMC headquarters in Boston, Public Relations Manager Laura Hurley said the rock garden was a fun, impromptu project by the crew. She said it didn't survive long and was knocked down by others passing through.
