I really enjoy hiking to Lake Solitude. Previous to last week I always hiked the Andrew Brook Trail. For the first time I tried the Newbury Trail. Including a .4 m R/T side trip vista, the hike is 5.6 m R/T. There was a lot of white birch blow-downs in the first .3 m but it was no big deal. At .4 m, I took a .2 m side trail for a great view of Newbury Harbor. There is some pretty steady climb on the first 1 mile plus but it wasn't to bad. At 1.3 there is a trail junction. To the right is the Rim Trail that I heard leads to a Mt Sunapee campground. I continued on the Newbury Trail which veered to the left. After .3m there is a beautiful vista of Lake Sunapee. The views are gorgeous. The sky was clear so I had great views of Mt Kearsarge, Cardigan, Moosilauke and many more White Mountain peaks in the distance. It was a treat having lunch here. After 30 min, I continued the last mile which for the most part is easy. The trail followed the ridgeline of South Peak to the Jack and June Junction. A short .1 m to Lake Solitude or continue an extra mile to the summit of Mt Sunapee ski area. Today I just hiked a short .2 miles to the top of White Ledges. The views looking down to Lake Solitude and east are spectacular. With the price of gas, I will be doing a lot of hiking in my area and this truly will be another time for this hike. I highly recommend both Andrew Brook Trail or the Newbury Trail.
