Hi all-
A close friend of mine is looking for a campground in the Whites on a lake or pond that rents kayaks and canoes, but is also close to some decent hiking. I suggested Umbagog, but she said it was too far, so I am guessing something less than three hours from Boston would be best.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Best regards,
Marty

White Lake State Park in Tamworth, NH, is a beautiful location with canoe rentals.

There are also commercial canoe rentals available alongside Rte. 16 in Ossipee and points north. Maybe someone else will recall their names before I can.

If you're trying to get there in three hours from Boston, remember that Rte. 16 is getting some special enforcement attention these days . . .

Thanks folks!

Sardog1, you are quite correct about the special enforcement on Route 16. I got pulled over in Ossipee on the night I finished my 48th NH 4k back in February. Fortunately, the nice trooper let me off with a warning, so my crowning moment was not bittersweet.

Danforth Bay campground

Marty,

Particularly if your friends are looking for something a bit less spartan than White Lake (but still a campground and not too expensive, I think), they might like Danforth Bay (formerly Shawtown) campground, which is off Ossipee Lake Road, in turn off Rte. 16, in Freedom. 2 hrs 25 minutes on average from Boston. It's on the shores of Danforth Pond, from or to which an ambitious paddler can pilot his canoe or yak without portaging to or from Ossipee Lake and Pine, Bearcamp or Silver River, not to mention brooks that take you over beaver dams into beautiful meadowlands to the north.

For hikes, you are 20 minutes from Chocorua, 25 from the Moats, Kearsarge etc. around No. Conway, etc.

More on the campground at www.danforthbay.com.
