Does anyone have or can give me a link to an up to date list of lean-to's in the ADK's and Catskills? I am trying to plan a trip and trail books are not always up to date with camping/lean-to availablity. I am finding that lean-to's in some locations have been removed but the books do not necessarily reflect this. Thanks.

Carol,
DO you have any past issues of Adirondac ?? THere is always a complete listing of Lean Tos in every spring issue as they solicit adopters for the lean-tos.

Another thought would be to call the ADK (518) 668-447 in Lake George and ask them if you can get John Schneider's Email address (He is the Adopt a L/T Coordinator) he could probably email you a complete list.

I cannot help you with the catskills (Other than Balsam Lake Firetower Lean to)
Good Luck
Rick

Check the maps?

The Catskills lean-tos are on the maps. There are maybe 2 or 3 that have been changed or taken down, but those were in areas where there were 2 in the same area.

What area are you especially interested in?

Like Paul says, the lean-tos in the catskills are marked on the TC maps. The only changes that I know of the location from my 1999 catskill maps to the latest is the leanto on Table has been moved from the Deer Shanty location across the infamous log bridge up high to just below the 3500' mark.

And the leanto on Long Pond by Mongaup was moved from the NW side of the lake to the SE side. (Although I don't know if this was a mistake on my 1999 map or the LT was moved, I just know the latest catskill maps shows it on the SE side.

The catskills maps don't list the legal campsites though.

The leantos in the ADKs are on my ADK guidebook map, they even list the number of campsites around the leanto too, whereas the TC catskill ones don't.

Terrace Mtn Leanto

I can tell you that the terrace mtn leanto at the end of the Terrace Mtn Trail, off of the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail is in great shape. Spent a night there last weekend. We also left a large amount of split firewood, since our trip was cut short by the blizzard. No water source close by though. Nice privy. We left a duraflame log in the corner of the leanto as well, should still be there unless there have been visitors in the last week.

My avatar is sunrise at the leanto (which faces east, obviously) from Jan 22.

GO PATRIOTS!!

I'm pretty sure that leanto is maintained by VFTT member Warren. It's been a few years since I've stayed there, I think the last time was 2002, but yes, I recall it being in great shape as well.
