A friend lost his iPhone on Saturday in a public park, and we located it on Sunday. Some lessons:
1. Ensure you have "Find My iPhone" turned on.
2) Turn on "Send location before battery dies" (Crucial!)
3) Remember your Mac login and password, otherwise you can't use someone else's phone on location to find yours.
4) Always keep your phone in a zippered pocket.
5) Even better, put it on airplane mode, stick it in your backpack, and just be present. (I'm not critiquing my friend on this one, but tell the folks who matter you'll be away from your phone until you get back, and leave it at that.)

p.s. Find My iPhone's GPS locator was pretty darn accurate. Maybe four feet off on the side of a scree field.
