Whitehouse to Liberty Springs Tr. to Franconia Ridge Trail and return. The snow had a frozen crust on it but the trail was broken all the way to Flume. It was rough and choppy earlier, but is in pretty good shape now with all the hikers today. I used microspikes to Liberty and switched to crampons from Liberty to Flume and back. Changed back to microspikes after the steeps of Liberty Spring Tr. The trail is very firm and solid and can be bare booted with no postholeing. I saw some with snowshoes, microspikes, crampons, and bare booters. Several crawl under blowdowns between Liberty and Flume. Major water crossing has snowbridge and is still intact. Beautiful sunny day with some breeze at the summits. 14 degrees at the trail head this morning and 45 degrees at 3:00. Nice meeting Jim Towle and his lovely hiking partner today. Sorry I forgot how to spell her name. Large group camping at the tent site tonight.
